The word “
Spa” stands for solus per aqua. Spa is actually a Latin word which means “healing through water”. The most common terms used to describe spa is
hydrotherapy or
balneotherapy, though practically there is a small difference between them. Hydrotherapy refers to the therapeutic use of water at any temperature or form, including hot baths, ice packs, vaporizers for soothing pains and treating diseases.
Balneotherapy is also a form of hydrotherapy, first introduced by a German Dominican priest, Father Sebastian Kneipp.
The difference between both is that the water in balneotherapy is dynamic. Thus the therapeutic benefits of balneotherapy are more extensive than hydrotherapy.
The history of hydrotherapy was first documented in the 5th century B.C. by the Greek physician Hippocrates, widely considered the Father of Medicine. Egyptian royalty Cleopatra, bathed with essential oils and flowers, while Romans had communal public baths for their citizens. In 19th century, Sebastian Kneipp published a book entitled My Water Cure and that was the starting point of the modern balneotherapy.

The characteristics of the water itself influence its healing power: buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure and temperature. Body weight in water is reduced by almost 90%, thus relieving pressure on sore joints and muscles. The power of buoyancy helps one with the weightlessness feeling which brings a sense of peace and relaxation. In addition, weightlessness relaxes tight muscles and releases endorphins or body natural pain killers into our system. Hot water raises our body temperature and causes blood vessels to dilate. This process increases blood circulation, including circulation of the immune system's white blood cells, which helps our body’s natural healing processes. On the other hand, cold water treatments are potentially effective for depression and pain relief.
The benefits of balneotherapy have been appreciated for hundreds of years. It has been used to treat rheumatologic conditions, musculoskeletal disorders, burns, stimulate the central nervous system and can change the mental state. In addition, balneotherapy reduces the effects of stress by increasing endorphin production, improves sleep, and prevents headaches. Hot tub balneotherapy is also reported to improve blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes, lower blood pressure, reduce symptoms of multiple sclerosis, influence on the automatic nervous system and improves the general state of our well-being.
